Mission

We recognize that the students and communities we serve face challenges that exceed the four walls of our classroom. We also recognize that a fleet of twenty-somethings, well-intentioned as they may be, ultimately cannot overcome the forces of systemic racism and classism alone.*

In an effort to continually advance our own knowledge, we, as Houston TFA Corps Members, have set forth to expand our own understanding of how race and class affect our students, ourselves, and the fortunes of the communities we serve.
As a committee, we compiled a list of texts that we thought would be useful in cultivating a critical consciousness and promoting our awareness of these issues, of these invisible and real forces that affect our students on a daily basis. The list of texts we compiled can be accessed by clicking the link above that says "Committee Texts."

In this blog space, each of us have committed to read a book over the summer and to pen our thoughts as we continue to read.  We invite anyone to press us with questions or their own thoughts, as well as to direct us toward other resources. This blog, we hope, will be a living and evolving space.

With that in mind, we hope that our individual endeavors to be more intentional, knowledgeable, and critically-minded beings enhances your own understanding and development in some way. With equal fervor, we hope to learn from you as well.
*Race and class are identified in this statement because the TFA Diversity Statement acknowledges race and class as two particularly significant forces that affect outcomes for our students. In no way do we mean to say that other issues of marginalization (LGBTQ, sex, gender, citizenship, status, etc.) are or should be relegated to the periphery.
